A rare and elegant No. 21 plant stand designed by Josef Hoffmann for Thonet, documented in the manufacturer's 1904 catalogue. An exceptional example of early Viennese modernism, this sculptural piece combines the refined craftsmanship of Thonet's bentwood furniture with the geometric clarity characteristic of Hoffmann's architectural approach.

The design is distinguished by its slender, elongated proportions and gracefully curved bentwood elements. Four vertical supports rise into two symmetrical, rounded arches, framing the upper platform and creating an elegant architectural silhouette. The gently curved upper shelf is complemented by a lower platform, providing two levels for displaying plants, flowers, or decorative objects.

Particularly distinctive are the perforated side panels surrounding the lower shelf, featuring a series of circular cutouts that introduce a subtle geometric rhythm. This decorative detail reflects Hoffmann's characteristic use of simple geometric forms, while the combination of curved and straight elements creates a harmonious balance between ornament and functional construction.

Finished in a soft ivory tone, the stand has developed a beautiful patina over time. Its delicate appearance, open construction, and restrained ornamentation make it an appealing example of the transition from nineteenth-century decorative furniture toward the more disciplined aesthetics of twentieth-century modernism.
