An exceptional Wave rocking lounge chair designed by Michal Riabič for the renowned Czech furniture manufacturer TON. Combining the centuries-old tradition of bentwood craftsmanship with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic, the Wave is both a comfortable lounge chair and an expressive sculptural object.
Created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of furniture bending in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, the Wave reinterprets the classic rocking chair through a modern design language. Its striking silhouette is defined by sweeping, continuous curves of dark-finished bent beechwood, creating a fluid structure that functions simultaneously as the chair's frame, armrests, and rocking base.
The generously proportioned, softly upholstered seat follows the curvature of the frame, offering a relaxed and supportive seating position. Finished in elegant ivory upholstery with subtle button tufting and a cylindrical headrest cushion, the chair presents a refined contrast between its soft, inviting surfaces and the dramatic geometry of its dark wooden construction.
The Wave also represents a remarkable achievement in traditional wood-bending technology. TON uses squared beechwood rods measuring approximately three metres in length for its production, among the longest wooden components employed in the company's manufacturing process. This demanding technique allows the chair's distinctive curves to be formed while preserving the structural integrity of the solid wood.
More than a conventional rocking chair, the Wave is a statement piece that brings together Czech furniture-making heritage, technical innovation, and contemporary sculptural design.
Excellent condition. The chair has seen very little use and retains its original upholstery and dark-finished bentwood frame. Only minimal signs of wear are visible, consistent with careful handling. The upholstery remains well preserved, and the wooden structure presents beautifully.
