A distinctive pair of PS Hässlö outdoor lounge chairs, designed by Monika Mulder for IKEA in 1995. Combining expressive postmodern aesthetics with the functional simplicity of Scandinavian design, these chairs demonstrate an inventive approach to materials, construction and everyday comfort.
The design is characterized by its slender, white-painted steel frames, formed from gracefully curved rods that create an exceptionally light and sculptural silhouette. The delicate framework supports contrasting smoky-grey acrylic seat and backrest panels, giving the chairs a striking graphic appearance while maintaining a sense of openness and transparency.
Particularly distinctive are the gently contoured seats, which extend forward in a subtle downward curve, and the broad, slightly inclined backrests. The translucent acrylic panels reveal the underlying steel structure, emphasizing the relationship between the supporting framework and the seating surfaces. Small oval feet complete the design, adding a playful detail to the otherwise minimalist construction.
Despite their delicate appearance, the chairs offer a comfortable and durable seating solution, originally conceived for outdoor use. Their unconventional proportions and elegant combination of materials make them equally suitable for contemporary interiors.
Both chairs are preserved in good original vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with their history. These imperfections are visible in the detailed photographs and reflect the authentic condition of the chairs after several decades of use.
