Sculptural Bentwood Lounge Chair by Jan Vaněk for Up Zavody, 1930s

Jan Vaněk / Functionalism in Motion.

Sculptural Bentwood Elegance.

Elegant and highly sculptural bentwood lounge chair designed by Jan Vaněk in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s. The chair embodies the refined balance between functionalist restraint and organic form that defines Vaněk’s most successful designs. Its flowing bentwood frame creates a continuous architectural silhouette, softened by gracefully curved armrests and an inviting low-slung seating position.

The woven seat and backrest emphasize the chair’s airy construction while providing excellent comfort and visual lightness. Seen from every angle, the chair presents a strong sculptural presence, combining modernist clarity with the warmth of natural materials.

This example has been fully restored. The bentwood frame has been carefully refinished and polished, while the seat and backrest feature newly replaced woven straps executed in a clean ivory tone faithful to the original character of the design. The construction is structurally sound and ready for everyday use.

An exceptionally elegant and increasingly rare lounge chair by one of the key figures of Czech Functionalist furniture design.
